UK grocery retailer Waitrose said today (11 November) that it continues to “significantly outperform the industry” after posting a 9% rise in third-quarter sales, excluding fuel.

On a like-for-like basis, total branch sales, excluding petrol, were up 4.4%, which Waitrose said was down to attracting new customers, while existing shoppers spent more.

Waitrose said the results were “particularly pleasing” as the company was “against some tough comparatives from last year”.

The retailer reports weekly sales figures and said sales for the week ending 6 November were up 9.8%.

The employee-owned retailer grew market share in the 12 weeks to 31 October to 4.2% from 4% last year, around double the rate of industry growth, according to Kantar Worldpanel market share data on Tuesday.
