Japan’s Yakult Honsha Co. is looking to build on the success of drinking yogurt Soful in Mexico by building a second production plant for the product.
The new facility, to be built in the city of Guadalajara at a cost of JPY2.2bn (US$20.23m), will turn out 120,000 bottles per day, Yakult said.
Initially, Soful and other Yakult products were only sold door-to-door but shops in Mexico are also now carrying Yakult dairy goods.
Nonetheless, a Yakult spokesman told just-food that it was the company’s legion of door-to-door “Yakult ladies” that have mostly boosted sales to about 3.2m units per day in just one year.
The company said it would also double the number of home delivery saleswomen in its force to meet the growing demand for its products.
