French retailer Auchan has said that it was able to grow sales during the first of the year despite an “unfavourable climate” in mature markets by maintaining its focus on international expansion.

Consolidated sales without VAT rose by 9.4% to EUR18.7bn (US$27.3bn). Auchan said markets outside France, which now account for 49.8% of total sales, drove gains.

Auchan said it is currently focused on increasing its international footprint. The company recently expanded its hypermarket business into the Ukraine and purchased 12 Ramstore stores from Enka in Russia. In order to expand its presence in the Persian Gulf, Auchan established a joint venture with Nakheel Group in Dubai.

Auchan declined to comment further on its full-year outlook when contacted by just-food.
