UK cash-and-carry operator Booker said today (16 September) its sales accelerated during the its fiscal second quarter after a boost from the summer’s football World Cup.

Booker said its total sales in the 12 weeks to 10 September were up 6.1% on the year. In the company’s first quarter, sales climbed 4.9%.

Booker’s like-for-like sales in its second quarter grew 5.9%; in the first quarter, they were up 4.8%.

Non-tobacco and tobacco like-for-like sales were up 5.9% and Booker said its “fresh departments performed particularly well”, with fruit and veg sales were up 46% and meat sales climbing 10%.

Booker chief executive Charles Wilson said: “Booker is continuing to improve customer satisfaction and sales growth is good.  During the last quarter sales were assisted by the benefits of the World Cup, a strong promotional programme and a good performance from Booker Direct.  Our plans to broaden the business, including booker.co.uk and our operations in India, are progressing well.”

Booker will announce interim results for the 24 weeks to 10 September on 14 October.
