A spokesman from the Japanese arm of the US company told Dow Jones yesterday [Tuesday] that the slash in new stores was largely because of the large-scale reorganisations currently occurring in the Japanese retail sector.

“Considering the current unstable situation in many business areas, we judge it better to beef up our existing store operations than to open stores aggressively,” he said.

McDonald’s stores are often located close to supermarket stores and shopping centres in Japan, but as the retail sector undergoes significant changes, such as restructuring and corporate failures, many of these businesses have been closed.
