The UK government has embarked on a review of the indirect impact of biofuel production.

Topping the list of issues to be examined are the implications that the production of biofuels could have on food production, a spokesperson for the Department of Transport told just-food.

“We’ve been determined to make biofuels sustainable. To this end, we have established a reporting mechanism that requires companies to report back to us on sustainability issues,” the spokesperson said.

“Our position in the UK is that we don’t want to go beyond 5% biofuel use until we can be satisfied that production is sustainable.”

This contrasts with the EU’s target to increase production to 10% by 2020.

Downing Street issued a statement earlier today that emphasised the government’s willingness to break with European policy on the issue.

“We need to look closely at the impact on food prices and on the environment of different production methods and to ensure we are more selective in our support,” Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s office stated.

“If our UK review shows that we need to change our approach, we will also push for change in EU biofuels targets.”
