Belgian food group Vandemoortele is to expand its margarine and fats business with a deal to buy a unit from Van Dijk Food Products.

Vandemoortele, the former owner of soy-food brand Alpro, has been making moves to expand its fats business said the deal, subject for regulatory approval, would increase its scale in the sector.

“Scale size at production level and joining forces in sales are the main trumps of this winning combination,” said CEO Jean Vandemoortele.

Van Dijk’s margarine and frying fats business, located in the Dutch town of Zeewolde, generated sales of EUR138m in 2009.

The company owns the Diamant en Gouda’s Glorie brands and produces margarines and frying fats under private labels for the retail and foodservice sector.

Some 80% of Van Dijk’s turnover is generated in The Netherlands.
