US frozen food sales have risen 5% in the last 12 months, according to a report by analysts Nielsen.

The frozen food category, which represents 12% of all US food and beverage sales, rang up US$36.9bn in sales during the year to 26 January.


Ice cream led the growth with over $4bn in sakes, followed by frozen pizza, novelties, and poultry and Italian entrées.


Some 68% of frozen food was purchased in grocery stores, the report said, while 17% was sold in supercenters and 10% in warehouses.


Almost a fifth – 19% – of frozen foods sold were private-label products, the report said.

Nielsen said shoppers from households earning above US$100,000 purchased more frozen soup, sauces and desserts than the average consumer, while larger households bought more frozen apple juice, ground beef and waffles.


Hispanics bought more Mexican entrees, apple juice, ground beef and frozen fruit while African-Americans took home more corn-on-the-cob, lima beans and non-breaded fish.
