Imports of fairtrade certified products into the US have risen to “record highs” this year, fairtrade body TransFair USA has claimed.

In its annual almanac, published yesterday (15 April), the US has seen “record volumes” of fairtrade imports as well as expansion into new product categories.

Such growth reflects increased demand and brand recognition, the certification body insisted.

“As consumer demand for ethically-produced goods increases, we’re able to chip away at the cycle of poverty that plagues farming communities around the world,” said Paul Rice, president and CEO of TransFair USA.

“Through their participation in fairtrade, farming families around the world captured more than US$45m in additional income. From those funds, $14m will be invested in community development programs that provide access to education and life-saving health care.”
