UK supermarket Asda, a subsidiary of US retail giant Wal-Mart, has overtaken Sainsbury’s to become the UK’s second-largest supermarket chain in terms of market share, according to the latest market data.

Industry analyst TNS, which bases its figures on till roll data, said Asda overtook Sainsbury’s for the first time in the four weeks to 20 July, reported Reuters.

Asda’s market share has increased to 17% from 16.1% in the year-ago period, while Sainsbury’s has fallen to 16.2% from 17.1%.

Tesco still holds its position as the UK’s leading supermarket chain, with a market share of 27%.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s, which was the market leader until 1995, said the chain was still the second largest grocery retailer in terms of food.

“Asda’s growth has been driven by non-food. We know that, we’re addressing it and we’re relaunching all our non-food in the autumn,” the spokesperson was quoted by Reuters as saying.
