Polish smoked salmon specialist Morpol has today (29 November) confirmed that it is set to open a salmon processing site in the UK next year, creating up to 300 jobs.

The GBP3.7m (US$5.8m) 150,000 sq ft secondary processing factory in Rosyth, near Edinburgh, is part of the Meridian Salmon Group, a subsidiary of Morpol. It is expected to open in the third quarter of 2012 and provide between 200 to 300 new jobs in the area.

The processing capacity at the site is expected to increase to 25,000 tonnes per year, up from Meridian’s current level of 2,500 tonnes. The new annual tonnage includes

The factory will process branded and private label fresh, smoked, value-added and ready-to-eat salmon, which will be sold in the UK and exported, Morpol UK managing director Geoff Cormack said.

Cormack said this investment is the main focus for the company in the UK over the next four years. “There will be a good spread between export and the UK,” he added.

The Meridian Salmon Group runs hatcheries, freshwater sites, seawater sites and processing activities on the Shetland and Orkney islands as well as on the Scottish mainland.

In addition, Morpol UK managing director Geoff Cormack will be moving into a group role for the Meridian Salmon Group as marketing and export director.

Morpol supplies own-label salmon to Aldi, Lidl and The Co-op, produces John West-branded salmon strips and employs around 300 to 350 people.
