Anger in Taiwan’s parliament over attempts to liberalise tough beef import rules has forged an agreement banning bovine ground beef, brains, eyes, spinal cords and intestines from any territory with BSE since 2000.
The agreement by the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) party and opposition Democratic Progressive Party will blocks ground beef imports from such countries until a cure has been found.
The move has angered the US government, which negotiated a deal in October to loosen Taiwan’s 2003 BSE-based restrictions on beef imports.
Washington said the move would “unjustifiably bar import of certain US beef and beef products” and had “no basis in science”.
