Imports of all rice products from China to the EU are likely to undergo checks for contamination with unauthorised GM varieties.
A spokesperson for the European Commission said a standing committee on GM food and feed was expected to approve proposals for such checks, with no member states opposing the idea in principle.

A formal vote could come as early as 14 November. “We’ve been detecting and finding unauthorised GM traces in rice products imported from China, for years … via the EU’s rapid alert system for food and feed,” said the spokesperson. “Now, we’re proposing member states do something about it.”
