Lactalis is on the point of acquiring two of its camembert packaging suppliers, Cibem and Balluteaud.

Both firms are part of the Société Nouvelle d’Emballage et de Conditionnement (SNEC) group, controlled by local businessman, Hervé Guillaume and both have spent periods in administration in recent times.

The French dairy giant’s works council was informed of the takeover moves at a meeting yesterday (4 October).

French media reports said Lactalis plans to retain Cibem’s 194-strong workforce and modernise its plant at Saint Pierre-sur-Dives, in Calvados, in Normandy. A Lactalis spokesperson declined to comment.

Balluteaud employs around 130 staff and operates from two plants in the Charente département.
