Meath County Council has been inundated with calls for it to allow German hard discounter Lidl to set up shop in Trim, with shoppers even threatening to boycott rival superstores in the area.

The news has upset existing supermarket groups. The Sunday Mirror quotes local Super-Valu manager Stephen Nally as saying that the move may force other supermarkets to close. He also warned that Lidl stores employ few staff compared to other retailers.

It is reported that the council has responded to the protest from shoppers keen to benefit from Lidl’s famed cheaper prices by offering the German company part of a 23-acre mid-town site.
