Carrefour CEO Lars Olofsson has appointed the head of its European operations as executive director of the French retailer’s faltering domestic unit.

Olofsson took over operational management of Carrefour France last month when former Tesco executive James McCarthy left the company after only 14 months in the role.

Carrefour said today (16 June) that its chief executive will continue to “oversee operations” but Noël Prioux, the head of the retailer’s European operations, will now be asked to “implement a recovery plan” to improve its performance in its domestic market.

Prioux, a 27-year veteran of Carrefour, was only asked to lead the company’s European arm last month to replace Vicente Trius, who left to become the president of Canadian retailer Loblaw.

He will now look to revitalise Carrefour’s French unit, which the retailer today admitted had performed below the executive board’s expectations in the first half of the year.

Thomas Hübner, who has had roles at Metro Group and McDonald’s, will succeed Prioux as executive director for Carrefour’s European operations. He will oversee the company’s businesses in Belgium, Spain, Italy, Poland, Greece and Romania.

Hübner spent eight years at Metro, including roles as COO of its Eastern European operations and as CEO of its international cash-and-carry unit.
