US grocer operator Supervalu Inc has expanded ‘nutrition iQ’, its in-store nutritional navigation programme.

The retailer said the scheme will now include its fresh food departments and provide “more robust” nutrition information from the centre store.

It will include additional nutritional attributes and health benefit information, which it said will allow customers to identify “better-for-you” foods from its ambient, frozen food, dairy, fresh produce, self-service meat and seafood departments.

The colour-coded signs, which have been developed in collaboration with dietitians from the Joslin Clinic, provide customers with “at-a-glance cues” to help them find healthy food options. They will now also feature key attributes of the foods with the signs, such as “Excellent/good source of fibre”, “Helps support healthy digestion,” “Excellent/good source of Vitamin C,” “Promotes skin and immune health,” “Excellent/good source of potassium” and “Important for muscle and bone health.”

“Mothers tell us the tags are like a GPS system for them – they lead the way and help them easily find the healthier products with kids in tow,” said Heidi Diller, Supervalu dietitian on Thursday (13 December).

“The expanded nutrition iQ program is perfect for consumers who want easy and practical tips to help them eat better-for-you foods. By highlighting the nutrition attributes and health benefits, we can help consumers understand how nutritional factors influence their diet so they have a better chance of realising success in managing their health.”
