UK union Unite has vowed to fight to save the Burton’s Foods biscuit factory in Moreton, which the company is planning to close.
The firm announced today (12 January) that the facility, which makes Cadbury biscuits, will close, with the loss of around 342 jobs by the end of the year.

Burton’s, which also makes Jammie Dodgers and Wagon Wheels biscuits, said the move would “improve the business’s capabilities and cost competitiveness”.
However, in an angry statement, Unite said Burton’s had agreed a deal with union officials three years ago to guarantee work until 2012 and to develop Moreton into a “flagship” site.
Unite said it would launch a “major campaign” to save the factory. “Burton’s has been part of the Wirral for generations, providing stable employment for families across the whole community,” Jennie Formby, Unite national officer for food and drink said. “So we will fight with all our power to save this plant because closure is not an option. It will devastate this community.
There will now be a 90-day consultation period on the proposed closure.
