Less than two months after tabling a proposal for a long-term recovery plan for some cod stocks, the European Commission has proposed a similar plan to help rebuild northern hake stocks.

The Commission said catches of hake are so high in relation to the size of the available stock that they threaten the capacity of this stock to replenish itself. Hence the need for a recovery plan involving low catches, reduced fishing effort and specific enforcement measures.
These recovery plans reflect the new approach under the reformed Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) that leaves behind short-term measures in favour of long-term strategies designed to help restore and maintain fish stocks at safe biological levels.
The estimated time frame for achieving the recovery objectives for northern hake is five to ten years. The Commission said it will shortly propose additional recovery plans for southern hake and for some stocks of sole and Norway lobsters.
“This second recovery plan confirms the application of the long-term approach under the new CFP. As with cod, this hake recovery plan was prepared after consultation with the sector and scientists. It is tailor-made to help rebuild the threatened northern hake stock and will contribute to our aim of achieving sustainable fisheries by a sustainable fishing industry. In the meantime, Member States must use the millions of euros of EU aid available to help the sector through these difficult times”, said Franz Fischler, Commissioner responsible for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries.
