The Australian fishing industry has said it is starting to recover from the A$100m (US$67.2m) loss of sales caused by the outbreak of SARS in Asia.

Australian Seafood Industry Council chief executive officer Russ Neal said there were signs the industry had turned the corner after experiencing a massive drop in sales to Asia since the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) began there.

The outbreak meant that many consumers in Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan and Singapore stayed away from restaurants, preferring instead to eat at home. But Neal said that people were beginning to return to restaurants, meaning that orders for Australian fish were picking up again, reported the Australian Associated Press.
