Poundland, Europe’s biggest single price discount retailer, today (20 January) announced a 6% rise in Christmas sales.
For the five weeks ending 1 January, like-for-like sales grew by 5.9%. Total sales for the period were up 24.9% year on year.

Chief executive Jim McCarthy said: “There’s no doubt that this Christmas has once again been tough for consumers. In the current economic climate, our like-for-like sales growth of just under 6% is very encouraging and demonstrates that Poundland has great appeal to millions of customers who want or need to save their money.”
The retailer has 382 stores and opened 50 in the past year.
