Barry Callebaut, the Swiss chocolate giant, has acquired Spanish nut maker La Morella.

The company said it moved for La Morella to meet the demands of customers that wanted more products that combined chocolate and nuts.

Barry Callebaut said the deal, struck for an undisclosed sum, would make it a “leader” among European nut product makers.

La Morella, it said, makes almonds, hazelnuts and “speciality” nuts including macadamia. The company manufactures about 8,000 tonnes of nut specialties per year at two manufacturing plants and generated sales revenue of around CHF40m (US$42m) in 2011, Barry Callebaut added.

CEO Juergen Steinemann said: “We are becoming a leading expert in nut-based products, which is a great adjacent offering to our existing gourmet and food manufacturers products business in Europe.”

La Morella CEO Joaquim Barriach added: “We feel proud to become a part of Barry Callebaut. Their knowledge, market reach and combination with chocolate will help us to further grow our business.”
