UK supermarket operator J Sainsbury is reported to have cut 200 supply chain and head office jobs and said a further 500 jobs may go this year.

Managing director Stuart Mitchell said the job cuts were not a short-term reaction to falling sales but instead were part of the three-year recovery programme put in place by CEO Sir Peter Davis, reported the Financial Times.

“This is in no way a reaction to anything that is going on in the business and it is not about slashing and burning. It is about trying to make this place more efficient and better able to service the stores and therefore our customers,” the newspaper quoted Mitchell as saying.
