A spokesperson for the retailer told just-food today (21 March) that the product, which had originally been found to contain between 1-5%, had now been found to contain 50% following further tests by a local authority.

The initial tests, undertaken by Asda, had resulted in the retailer pulling the product from its shelves a number of weeks ago.

David Bull, head of Leicestershire County Council’s Trading Standards Service, which carried out the tests said: “We carried out tests on Asda’s Smart Price Corned Beef (340g) following concerns raised by a consumer. These have tested positive for the presence of horse meat. The product was withdrawn by Asda on March 8 as a precaution.”
