Belgium-based United Petfood has acquired a private-label peer in the UK, Cambrian Pet Foods.

Family-owned Cambrian Pet Foods is headquartered in the Welsh village of Llangadog in the south-west district of Carmarthenshire, which also houses its wet pet-food plant. The company operates two other UK-based dry-food plants in Pencader, also in Carmarthenshire, and Longridge in north-west England. It also has a factory in Poland.

The business was founded in 1982 by David Davies and is led by managing director Richard Davies. It employs 130 people and produces dry and wet pet foods in both trays and cans, and also snacks and biscuits.

United Petfood said the deal, for which financial terms were not disclosed, “strengthens” its position in the wet segment having entered the category with the opening of a dedicated factory in the Polish city of Radom, in the east-central area of the country.

The company added: “It is our goal to establish long-term relationships with our customers and be their preferred partner for the production of private label dry and wet pet food, biscuits and snacks. The acquisition of Cambrian Pet Foods allows us to extend our product range and be a one-stop solution for our customers.”

With the three UK plants it will inherit from Cambrian, United Petfood now has 17 production facilities spread across eight European countries, including Belgium – the UK, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Poland and Romania.
