The news Maggi production has started up is widely thought to pave the way for a return to Indian shelves, bringing to an end bans on the sale of the noodles that started this summer.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India claimed the product contained excess levels of lead. Nestle has refuted the accusation and insisted its noodles are safe. The Swiss company challenged the ban in the Bombay High Court, which ordered fresh testing. These tests returned negative. leaving Nestle able to resume production. Further tests on the new batches will be needed before Maggi noodles go back on sale.

"In compliance with the orders of the Hon’ble High Court of Bombay, fresh samples from these newly manufactured batches will be sent for testing to the three accredited laboratories mandated by the Hon'ble High Court. We shall commence sale only after the samples are cleared by these laboratories," Nestle noted.
