The chief executive of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, the body responsible for implementing India's food safety regulations, has been reassigned to a post within a government think-tank.

FSSAI CEO Yudhvir Singh Malik will take up the role of additional secretary at the National Institution for Transforming India Aayog, an order issued by India's Personnel Ministry has confirmed.

Malik was responsible for overseeing the controversial recall of Nestle's brand of Maggi noodles in July. While the FSSAI insisted that the product was contaminated with levels of lead that exceeded regulations, the company repeatedly insisted its own and independent tests showed the noodles were safe.

Former agriculture secretary Ashish Bahuguna was named chairman of FSSAI in July, at the height of the Maggi scandal.

Indian reports suggest that Malik will no longer serve as CEO of the food safety regulator, although this has not been confirmed by the authorities. just-food was unable to reach officials at the FSSAI or Personnel Ministry at time of press. If Malik is to exit the FSSAI, a successor is yet to be named.
