Indian conglomerate Mahindra Group has refused to confirm or deny reports it is preparing to enter the country’s dairy sector.

In a report carried by India’s Economic Times, Ashok Sharma, chief executive of agri and allied businesses at Mahindra, was quoted as saying the firm was “exploring inorganic strategies for entry into the diary business”.

The report added the firm, which has interests in fresh produce production, wanted to focus on milk initially and had plans to introduce a “pouched milk”.

However, speaking to just-food today (28 August), a spokesperson for Mahindra said there was “nothing specific I can say”.

The spokesperson said: “We can’t give you a yes or no,” adding the report was “part of a broader discussion that took place”.

In April, Mahindra announced plans to form a venture with Belgian produce giant Univeg to develop a fresh fruit supply chain to serve the Indian and international markets.
