German retailer AVA has said it plans to open up to ten hypermarkets in the Moscow region in the next three to four years.

The first hypermarket is due to open at the beginning of February in Kotelniki, east of Moscow. The €40m (US$42.6m) Marktkauf brand store will include a supermarket, a DIY home supply store and a garden centre.

AVA is currently choosing between 66 plots of land for the construction of a further seven or eight hypermarkets. The company predicts that more than 80% of the goods sold at its hypermarkets will come from Russia, reported the Moscow Times.

Turkish retailer Ramenka, German retailer Metro and French retailer Auchan already have stores in the region.
