An online chat with Franz Fischler, Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries will be held on 17 June 2002 from 18 :00 to 20 :00 hours (CET).

Fischler will answer questions on the Reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) following the adoption by the Commission, on 28 May 2002, of its first package of proposals aiming to make the CFP more effective and better able to respond to the challenges facing the EU fishing industry. Internet users will be able to participate in this chat in any of the 11 EU languages on the Internet site of the Commission.

Fischler said “The Commission proposal is based on the outcome of a wide-ranging consultation process which lasted over three years with fishermen, the industry, scientists regions and national governments. With this Internet chat, we want to maintain this constructive dialogue with all those interested in the future of the fishing sector. It will also give me an excellent opportunity to better explain this reform proposal to the stakeholders. My message is clear: “We have to save the dwindling fish stocks in order to save the future of our fishing sector.”
