UK supermarket Waitrose has announced plans to export branded products from SMEs to overseas markets.

The firm said had “a huge uplift” in sales of its own-label lines in international markets. Waitrose exports private-label lines products including Essential Waitrose and Duchy Originals to 50 countries worldwide.

However, Waitrose said demand for “premium” UK brands was high and had prompted the upmarket retailer to form an export arm for branded suppliers.

David Morton, Waitrose’s director of business to business, said: “There is significant appetite from retailers overseas for the premium British brands and niche brands from smaller producers that we sell in our UK shops – and we’re developing our export business in response to that demand.”

Brands working with Waitrose include Cornish Sea Salt and Doves Farm Organic.
