Imperial Sugar has shut its Sugar Land, Texas, plant, blaming a US market glut and a poor geographical position. The company’s Georgia and Louisiana plants, closer to cane crops, will handle current needs.

The closure of the plant, which processed up to 1.4 million kilograms of granulated, brown and powdered sugar each day, will mean more than 300 people will lose their jobs.

Imperial says it is keeping its headquarters in Sugar Land and will continue to run a packaging and shipping operation there, with about 100 workers.
