PKM Duda, the Poland-based meat processor, has applied to the country’s anti-trust body to acquire two local companies – Meat-Pac and Bekpol.

Announcing the application, Poland’s competition watchdog, UOKiK, said Meat-Pac and Bekpol operate primarily in Walbrzych, a city in south-west Poland.

UOKiK said in and around Walbrzych was “an area in which PKM Duda is so far limited”. It added: “The area is considered by PKM Duda as having prospects of further development and the company wants to build its market position there.”

Meat-Pac manufactures poultry meat and also has operations in the wholesale of meat and cold cuts. Bekpol operates in the wholesale market of meat and meat platters, UOKiK said.

Fellow Polish meat group Cedrob acquired a majority stake in PKM Duda last year.

In March this year, PKM Duda had announced the sale of a beef unit and said it would focus squarely on the production of pork products.
