US retailer Winn-Dixie Stores has closed two stores in Mississippi, and sold one other, blaming the closures on competition and lack of business.

Mickey Clerc, a spokesman for the company, explained the reason for the closure of stores in Brandon and Richland: “There are situations where additional supermarkets will open in an area. Sometimes an area gets over-stored and that’s the case in both of those areas.”

Supermarket Developers has purchased the lease on the Winn-Dixie store in Mendenhall. The store is expected to reopen as Budget Saver Foods.

“Sales were not satisfactory for us and that would be the reason for selling the (Mendenhall) store,” Clerc was quoted by the Associated Press as saying.
