Regional leaders in the UK’s National Farmers’ Union are calling on the government to help out shareholders of a struggling Derbyshire milk processing plant.

The Amelca plant in Foston went into receivership last month, just three months after production was launched. Half of the 70-strong workforce was made redundant. Some 150 dairy farmers within a 25-mile radius of the plant each invested £20,000 (US$31,148), and it looks probable that they will lose that money now.

The National Farmers’ Union has asked Secretary of State Margaret Beckett to help these shareholders. Beckett attended the opening ceremony of the new plant, and is MP for Derby South as well as heading up the Department of Food and Rural Affairs.
