A Calvo spokesperson told just-food the extra staff will enable the business to operate more weekend shifts at its plant in the municipality of Carballo, located in north-western Spain.

The company has also agreed to pay a EUR300 (US$323.80) bonus to existing workers for their support during the Covid-19 pandemic, which in Europe has hit Spain particularly hard, along with Italy.

Across its plants in Spain, Costa Rica and Brazil, Calvo has implemented stricter security measures and protocols including social distancing, extensive cleaning and temperature monitoring of employees to minimise the coronavirus-related risk, the spokesperson told just-food.

Calvo produces tinned fish and other seafood under its namesake brand, while its Nostromo and Gomes da Costa units in Brazil and Costa Rica supply canned tuna and sardines.
