American Crystal Sugar has announced that it intends to buy three sugar-beet factories from Imperial Sugar, the largest sugar processor in the US.

Financial terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed.

The company has said that if the deal goes ahead, it does not plan to operate all three plants itself. The Torrington, Wyoming plant would be leased to Western Sugar Cooperative of Denver. The Hereford, Texas plant has not been in use since 1998, and American Crystal does not plan to immediately open it. The company will operate the Sidney, Montana plant itself.

American Crystal is a farmer-owned cooperative of around 3000 members. It currently has factories in Frayton and Hillsboro in North Dakota and in East Grand, Forks, Crookston and Moorhead in Minnesota.
