French prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin has indicated that France will request that the European Union “maintain milk quotas beyond the 2008 deadline” within the framework of the CAP.
Raffarin was speaking at the opening of Congrilait in Paris on Tuesday.
Set up in 1984, the quotas had proved their worth well beyond the initial five-year period planned for them, he said.
They had allowed production to be contained within a context of budgetary control as well as ensuring against excessive restructuring in the sector, he added.
For the period 2001/02, the total quota for deliveries to dairies was set at 117.72 million tonnes but nine states Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria and Finland) had contributed to an overrun in the EU amounting to 450 000 tonnes.
