The ban was imposed earlier this month after an outbreak of avian influenza at a Californian turkey farm. The virus, which is a designated infectious disease in Japan, was found in New York and Virginia before the Californian outbreak.

The ministry said that necessary precautions had been carried out to prevent the spread of the disease, so the ban would be lifted on imports of meat from the US, except from California, Virginia and New York, reported Jiji Press English News Service.
