Canadian frozen-potato products firm McCain Foods is looking to downsize its UK workforce with 230 jobs likely to go.

The French fries and hash browns maker said it “plans to optimise its network of production facilities in the UK” and as a result it is, subject to consultation, looking to reduce employee numbers at its plant at Grantham, Lincolnshire, in eastern England.

A spokesperson for the McCain said: “This proposal has been made after an extensive review of current and future requirements for the McCain UK business, and will ensure we continue to be an efficient and customer-focused business that is fit for the future.

“If the proposal is accepted, the site will continue production with approximately 150 roles ongoing. We remain committed to our operations in Grantham and the UK and no other McCain sites are included in this proposal.”

McCain  employs some 1,600 people in the UK. Aside from Grantham, it has production facilities in Scarborough, Whittlesey, Wombourne and Hull and a potato seed business in Montrose, Scotland.

The Grantham plant was a sister company to McCain until 2017, operating under the name of PAS (Grantham).
