Brasmar, a Portugal-based seafood specialist, has acquired La Balinesa, a Spanish company which produces smoked salmon.
The deal takes Brasmar, owned by local investment firm Vigent Group, into chilled products for the first time. La Balinesa is a family-owned business based in La Antigua in Leon.
Brasmar said its purchase – for an undisclosed sum – “reinforces its national leadership by entering a new business segment and diversifying its already wide range of available products, while also strengthening its Iberian position”.
It has brought in seafood industry veteran David Casañ Gil to head up its new refrigerated business in Spain. Casañ Gil will also become chief operating officer of the Brasmar group, in charge of operations and supply chain.
Founded by Jesus Llamas in 1991, La Balinesa is currently one of the best-known companies in the manufacture of smoked fish products in Spain.
Brasmar said it is still active in identifying further acquisition targets in order to strengthen its position in the European market.
