A judicial request by the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association (CRFA) that Canadian pizzerias be made exempt from their country’s price controls on cheese has been rejected by the Ontario Divisional Court.

The association wants its cheese supplies to be liberalised, with the price fluctuating according to supply and demand, as in the US. Instead, Canada operates a controlled dairy supply system, fixing prices.

The Ontario court judges said: “We do not see that the Association
(CRFA) was truly disadvantaged or hampered in any material and relevant way.”

Dairy Farmers of Canada has long opposed such a move, claiming that it would hurt producers and any reduction in price would not be passed on to consumers.
