The UK’s fifth-largest food retailer Somerfield has reported a growth in sales of 2.2% in the second quarter after a 0.3% sales decline in the first quarter.

The company’s first-half sales were up 0.8%, still lagging behind rivals Tesco, which reported a first-half sales rise of 3.9%, and J Sainsbury, which posted a 2.4% increase in second-quarter sales.

Somerfield, which operates around 600 Somerfield stores and 700 budget Kwik Save stores, also announced that Kwik Save managing director Graham Maguire had agreed to step down with immediate effect. Group buying director Robin Whitbread is to combine his role with that of managing director.

Like-for-like sales at Somerfield stores increased by 0.4% in the first half, while same store sales at Kwik Save rose 1.3%.
