Swiss food giant Nestlé has denied reports by Chinese newspapers that it breached the country’s rules on genetically modified food.

Reports alleged earlier in the week that Nestlé had sold food with GM ingredients without the correct labelling.

In a statement, Nestlé said that its products in China are in strict compliance with the Chinese government regulations and Nestlé’s own standards respecting international regulations and guidance. The company has not explicitly confirmed or denied whether or not the specific products mentioned in the news reports contain genetically modified ingredients.

A spokeswoman for Nestlé told Dow Jones Newswires: “The rules on labelling of genetically modified food products issued in March of this year apply to imported agricultural products. Nestlé’s products are processed final-use food products and aren’t covered by these rules.”
