The top five companies accounted for 7% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Nestle filed the most plant-based diets patents within the consumer industry in Q1 2024. The company filed 17 plant-based diets-related patents in the quarter, compared with 37 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Roquette Freres with 13 plant-based diets patent filings, Cargill (11 filings), and Amano Enzyme (10 filings) in Q1 2024.

Patenting activity was driven by China with a 52% share of total patent filings

The largest share of plant-based diets related patent filings in the consumer industry in Q1 2024 was in China with 52%, followed by the US (8%) and Japan (7%). The share represented by China was 26% higher than the 26% share it accounted for in Q4 2023.
