Research and innovation in supply chain and logistics among food manufacturers sector has rebounded in recent months, according to GlobalData.
The most recent figures show the number of applications made for patents centred on supply chain and logistics stood at 13 in the three months ending February, under the 14 seen over the same period in 2021 but up from the four recorded in the three months to August 2021.
Figures for patent grants related to supply chain and logistics grew from four in the three months ending February 2021 to six in the same period in 2022.
The figures are compiled by GlobalData, which tracks patent filings and grants from official offices around the world. Using textual analysis, as well as official patent classifications, these patents are grouped into key thematic areas and linked to key companies across various industries.
GlobalData, Just Food’s parent, has identified supply chain and logistics as being a key disruptive force facing companies in the coming years and is one of the areas that companies investing resources in now are expected to reap rewards from.

PepsiCo was the top supply chain and logistics innovator in the food manufacturing sector in the latest quarter. The company filed 12 related patents in the three months ending February. That was up from six over the same period in 2021.
It was followed by Taiwan-based Uni-President China Holdings (with three), Ajinomoto (two) and Nissin Foods Holdings (one).
PepsiCo has recently ramped up R&D in supply chain and logistics. It saw a growth of 50% in related patent applications in the three months ending February compared to the same period in 2021. That was the highest percentage growth out of all companies tracked with more than ten quarterly patents in the food manufacturing sector.
