Starting the Christmas-millennium season, a few pounds overweight is depressing enough, but imagine being able to enjoy the festive fare without being tempted to over-indulge. Enter a yoghurt from Sweden called Skane Dairy Maval. Eating a carton a day over the Christmas period could transform the outcome of the festive season.

Maval yoghurt is a functional food because it replaces the usual 2.3% of milk fat in each 200g carton with Olibra, an entirely natural and healthy extract of palm oil and oat flakes. This unique ingredient works with the body to help you feel full faster and stay feeling full for longer.

The satiety factor, and the way in which the Olibra in Maval yoghurt works to effectively `magic’ the brain into sending out feel full signals, has been validated by three clinical trials conducted by the University of Ulster Nutrition Department(1).

A new study of over a million men and women in all age groups confirmed that the risk of premature death from all causes (cardiovascular, cancer or other diseases) increases if you are moderately or severely overweight(2) and makes depressing reading over the festive season. The study also provides strong additional evidence that being overweight is associated with shorter lifespan.

Keeping a watchful eye on those extra pounds is a sensible precaution so what better solution than to eat one of these `cool’ fruit yoghurts which can help you keep trim without trying.

The trick is to enjoy the Christmas fare but want less of it! Nutritionists tell us we should never diet because it doesn’t work. These experts say that 90% of people who go on diets put the weight back on, and more, within two years and that `yo-yo’ dieting is a body and mind stressor which contributes to many problems and robs you of energy(3).

So here’s where Skane Dairy Maval comes into its own. The placebo controlled diets showed that those eating this yoghurt with their lunch felt satisfied for around 20% longer than those who ate an ordinary yoghurt with a similar fat and calorie content. They also ate less for dinner.

With two studies in JAMA(4) revealing that more than half of all adults in America are considered overweight or obese, this is indeed food for thought. Adding this natural functional food to your Christmas shopping list could help ensure you enjoy the festive season and are still the same size in clothes when the January sales come around. That has to be a bonus!

Skane Dairy Maval will be widely available throughout the UK by Spring 2000 but meanwhile it can be bought in most Safeway stores. There are two flavours, Strawberry and Lemon and each 200g carton costs 75p.
