The gradual acceptance of genetically modified organisms (GMOs)is threatening to suffocate the chemical crop protection market by making seeds more resistant to growth retardants. Corn, soybean, and cotton crop markets are already seeing significant adoption of genetically engineered seeds. According to new strategic market research by Frost & Sullivan (www.frost.com), U.S. Crop Protection Chemical Markets, the total revenues for 1999 are estimated at $8.17 billion. The impact of GMOs and a number of other factors, including global weather patterns, will affect the growth of this market through 2006. The rise in GMOs is forcing many manufacturers of crop protection chemicals to redesign their business plans to stay afloat. Some companies are considering mergers with seed/life science companies to diversify their product lines.

“Unfavorable weather conditions increase demand for crop protection chemicals,” observes Frost & Sullivan Analyst Amit Tandon. “El Niño created difficult conditions for crop growth throughout the United States. A wide range of weather effects has pushed farmers to seek assistance in sustaining crops and protecting them from harmful fungi, insects and other growth deterrents.”

Consequently, crop protection chemical markets saw significant growth. However, the subsequent year, the weather phenomenon La Niña brought extreme conditions and as a result, demand for pesticides diminished. Since few manufacturers can afford to rely on the weather to determine their degree of success, companies must develop long-range strategies to ride out the storms and droughts.
The expiration of patents will create important challenges and opportunities for market participants. As patents for products expire, generic manufacturers are likely to offer the same products at lower prices.

“Research firms will be forced to respond,” says Tandon. “Research-based manufacturers must continually introduce new products to compensate for the loss of share from patent expiration. Targeting the research areas with the most promise will be crucial for these firms.”

This Frost & Sullivan report analyzes the markets for crop protection chemicals based on their end-use application. It covers herbicides, insecticides, fungicides and plant growth regulators (PGRs). The study examines key drivers and restraints and tracks industry trends.
Frost & Sullivan presents 2000 Market Engineering Awards to companies that have worked hard to make a positive contribution to the crop protection chemical industry. The 2000 Market Engineering Merger and Acquisition Award is given to BASF. The 2000 Market Engineering Strategic Alliance Innovation Award goes to Monsanto Corporation and the 2000 Market Engineering Web Site Leadership Award is presented to AstraZeneca.
