Allied Bakeries, the bakery unit of Associated British Foods, has said it is closing its Chester Road distribution centre in Saltney Ferry, Chester.

A spokesperson told just-food that the company decided to close the site as a result of a “detailed review” to “improve the efficiency of our bread distribution network”.

The Kingsmill maker has been working to improve profits at its bakery business, which has struggled in the face of difficult trading conditions in the UK bakery market.

“We are currently consulting with our employees and their Union representatives about these proposals, which if accepted would, regrettably, result in 53 people being placed at risk of redundancy,” the spokesperson said.

“We understand that this will be a difficult and unsettling time for our employees and their families. If the proposals are accepted every effort will be made to help those people affected secure alternative employment, either within other parts of Allied Bakeries operations, or externally in the local area, including the wider network of businesses owned by Associated British Foods,” the spokesperson continued.
