The transaction is contingent on China opening up its market to beef from Ireland, with officials in Dublin and Beijing in talks on a deal.

The agreement will take in Slaney Foods, another Irish meat processor in which ABP owns a 50% stake.

Mark Goodman, managing director of ABP’s international division, said the deal “is another significant step in developing new market opportunities for our products against the uncertain backdrop of Brexit”.

ABP already serves other markets in Asia, including Hong Kong, the Phillippines and Japan.
